Grow Women’s Health Story

gro.w women’s health in Canberra was created to promote greater awareness and knowledge regarding women’s health and pelvic floor conditions. As women, our bodies undergo many changes which can impact function and lifestyle. Many of these changes, whether they be injuries, pregnancy changes, birth experiences, postnatal recovery, hormonal changes or our physical and mental growth, can be better navigated and managed with the right information and support. Our goal is to enable women to self-manage their recovery and provide them with education to prevent future dysfunction.

gro.w was started by sisters Juanita and Julia, who are both passionate about the care women receive throughout their lives. They each spent several years working in the public and private sectors, before deciding to create a space that is specifically targeted to help women.

Meet the gro.w team

Julia – Physiotherapist

Julia graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Medical Science before completing her Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Canberra. Early in her career she developed a passion for pelvic floor physiotherapy and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy through the University of Melbourne. To compliment her unique skill set Julia has also completed the extensive Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute training and is a certified clinical Pilates instructor. Julia has a strong passion for providing women with the information and knowledge to prevent or cure many of the common symptoms they can face throughout life.

When Julia isn’t working or studying she is spending time with her family, tracking down the best pastries and coffees Canberra has on offer, trekking up and down the mountains around this beautiful city, or enjoying a wine with friends.

Juanita – Physiotherapist

At the ripe old age of 13, Juanita decided she would be a Physiotherapist. Once school was out of the way, Juanita completed a Bachelor of Human Nutrition and a Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Canberra. As a new physio recruit who grew up playing sport, Juanita imagined she would aspire to be a Sports Physio, but soon realised her passion lay in pelvic floor physiotherapy.  She went on to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy through the University of Melbourne.  Complimenting this, Juanita has also completed her Pilates training through the Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute. Through her own experience in sport and her work in pelvic floor physiotherapy, Juanita has a passion for providing women with the information and support needed to manage their physical function and health through anything life throws at them.

When Juanita isn’t talking about all things pelvic floor or injury management, she’s running on the trails around Canberra, walking her giant fur child or chasing her three small human ones.

Brooke – Physiotherapist

Brooke’s physiotherapy career started in Brisbane after completing a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland. Brooke quickly developed an interest in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and combining clinical treatment with Pilates to improve patient outcomes. Brooke expanded her expertise delving into the realm of Pilates through training at Studio Pilates and Universal Practice. Currently, Brooke works in one of the local hospital Emergency Departments focusing on diagnosing acute injuries, managing fractures, and addressing other musculoskeletal concerns that walk through the door. Brooke’s passion for improving health has led her to pursue a Master of Health Policy with the hope to inform population level health interventions one day.

In her spare time you will find Brooke cooking, chasing her children around, travelling or trying to squeeze in a run or some pilates.

Casey – Physiotherapist

Casey‘s interest and motivation to become a physiotherapist stems back to her days as an elite gymnast at the Australian Institute of Sport where she trained for several years.  Following her gymnastic career and school life, Casey went on to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science and a Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Canberra.

Since graduating, Casey has worked in the private sector in Canberra where she gained experience and skills in treating both the general and sporting population.  Complimenting this experience, Casey went on to complete her Post Graduate of Sports Physiotherapy through La Trobe University.  She has since worked with various elite athletes and sporting teams and has developed a strong interest in treating overuse injuries relating to the shoulder, back, pelvis, hips and lower limbs along with tendon pain.

Casey is incredibly thorough in all she does and this extends outside the clinic with her renovation projects and coffee habits.  When she isn’t treating you will find Casey enjoying a glass of wine with friends, spending time with her growing family or escaping to the country or the coast.

Casey is on maternity leave until 2024.
Emily – Physiotherapist & Pilates Instructor

After graduating from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Nursing and working as a Surgical Nurse in theatres and recovery, Emily went on to complete a Graduate Certificate of Human Movement Science and her Masters of Physiotherapy from the University of Canberra. With a background of elite-level training and competition as a distance runner, Emily is very passionate about helping others discover their own physical capacity and getting the most out of themselves.

Following some time spent working on a Canberra-based maternity ward, Emily became fascinated with the women’s health world of physiotherapy. She is currently completing a Graduate Certificate in Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy and a Graduate Certificate in Exercise and Women’s Health through the University of Melbourne to further her knowledge and experience in this area. Emily has a particular interest in return to activity/exercise following pregnancy, and is excited to help women achieve their exercise-based goals and safely restore strength postpartum. Emily has also completed the Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute Mat-work and reformer training and uses this to assist her clients with all stages of their treatment and recovery.

When not working or studying, you’ll find Emily running or walking on the beautiful Canberra trails with friends, or enjoying a lazy day at home with her partner.
